Dog Size Guide

Dog clothes fail for one reason: people buy by breed. Take three measurements with a soft tape and you will get it right the first time.

The three measurements

  1. Neck: around the base of the neck, where a collar sits. Slide two fingers under the tape.
  2. Chest: the widest part, just behind the front legs. This is the one that decides the size.
  3. Back length: from the base of the neck to the base of the tail. Measure standing, not sitting.

If your dog lands between two sizes, go up. A coat that is slightly long is fine. A coat that is tight across the chest never gets worn.

General size chart

Use this as your starting point. Every product page carries its own chart, and that one wins if the two disagree.

Size Neck Chest Back length Typical weight
XS 7-9 in 11-13 in 8-10 in 3-6 lb
S 9-11 in 13-16 in 10-12 in 6-11 lb
M 11-13 in 16-19 in 12-15 in 11-20 lb
L 13-16 in 19-23 in 15-18 in 20-35 lb
XL 16-19 in 23-28 in 18-22 in 35-55 lb
2XL / XXL 19-22 in 28-33 in 22-26 in 55-80 lb
3XL 21-24 in 32-37 in 25-29 in 75-95 lb
4XL 23-26 in 36-41 in 28-32 in 90-110 lb
5XL 25-28 in 40-45 in 31-35 in 105-130 lb
6XL 27-30 in 44-49 in 34-38 in 125-150 lb
7XL 29-33 in 48-54 in 37-42 in 145-180 lb

3XL and up are giant-breed sizes and only exist on some of our coats and hoodies. If a product does not list them, the maker does not cut them.

Breeds that need a note

  • Deep-chested dogs (Greyhound, Whippet, Doberman): size by chest, then expect the length to run short. A coat cut for a Labrador will be wide and stubby on a sighthound.
  • Barrel-chested dogs (French Bulldog, Pug, Staffy): go one size up from what the weight column suggests. Their chest is wider than their weight implies.
  • Long-backed dogs (Dachshund, Corgi): size by back length, not chest, or the coat will stop halfway down.
  • Thick double coats (Husky, Samoyed, Chow): measure over the coat, not through it.

Boots

Paw width is what matters, not length. Press your dog's paw onto a sheet of paper with their weight on it, mark either side of the widest point, and measure between the marks. Add about a quarter inch. Boots that fit exactly slip off on the first walk.

Products that come in one size

Bowls, brushes, toys, scoopers and most gear are one size, and the page says so. Where a real dimension exists we print it next to the size, so "One size (70 cm)" is the length of the leash, not a guess.
